Batteries are hazardous materials

When organising homes, I frequently encounter hazardous materials that require special handling. Here's your guide to safe disposal in the UK.

Paint Disposal

Water-Based Paint

  • Allow it to dry completely or use hardener, cat litter, sawdust, soil or sand to dry it out before taking it to a local recycling centre which accepts dried paint

  • Donate via Freegle / Freecycle / Trash Nothing / Next Door

  • Donate to a scheme such as Community RePaint which is a UK wide network of over 75 schemes who collect paint and make it available to individuals and families in social need, community groups and charities

Oil-Based Paint

  • Must be disposed of as hazardous waste

  • Take to designated local council facilities

  • Never pour down drains or into soil

  • Keep in original containers
